The tricky bit about this argument is that the same could be said about slavery, fgm, childhood marriage...
Not saying those are ok, but hey, we have laws against those things, right? How is the intention behind the existing laws different than the intention of people trying to prevent abortion, gay marriage, gender affirming care?
Science, you might say, but for some people the word of an invisible god is more important.
