The fact that #mautrix bridges work this good is insane. I ran into my first disconnect in 6 months on the mautrix/whatsapp bridge. I got a proper error message, logged back in and my stuff works again.

I dont think people who can operate a matrix server have any trouble running a mautrix bridge.

There are also bridges for discord, facebook messenger, instagram, signal, telegram and others.

@haui yeah it's great! If you don't want to host it yourself, you can also buy element one for 5$ a month and all you have to do is link your accounts. I use it for signal.
@Equareo @haui Does element bridges today cost only 5$ month? Last time I tried their Whatsapp bridge it did work but the pricing was tied to how many Whatsapp users did send you message and for me the price was more like 50$ in month which is ridicilous. I am now using etke.cc

@alaraajavamma @haui

Yes, it seems like they don't support discord though https://ems.element.io/element-one

i really appreciate the effort to make digital freedom more achievable and stick it to the man.

but thats the thing. either you pay for something or you learn to do it yourself.

with selfhosted bridges you can do unlimited of everything with zero cost (thats a lie, you must run the software on something but that could be a home server if you wish).

i personally use fluffychat instead of element since I like the implementation better and synapse for the server. 👍

@haui @Equareo Yeah excatly that is why I am more than happy to pay for foss services as far as cost is somewhat reasonable. etke.cc pricing is visible and you know what it will cost every month. With element it is hidden (I tried to dig the pricing but was not able to find it - if it is 5$ month it sounds very cheap but I can't find actual full pricelist anywhere)

@alaraajavamma @haui

It says 5$ a month on the link i sent you, and i personally use the service and pay 55 a year. :)

@Equareo @haui Yep, thanks I see it there but I tried to search it from element website but never found it - well maybe their core business is something else than insividuals buying bridge services 😁. I think I will throw 5€ there and see how it works

@alaraajavamma @haui

yeah, i tried finding it on the website, strange that it is "hidden".

@alaraajavamma i'm in a particular rotten mood today so take this with a grain of salt. as a foss developer who will probably never even pay his coffee, let alone his rent from donations, I do understand foss companies using anti customer practices as most people love to see you starve while using your product for free. fuck those who could afford it but choose not to give back.

@haui While I agree with you 100% I have to say that this is hard topic.
E.g. if I donate monthly 5€ to each foss project which I need for my daily tasks that would cost me more than my all my other living expenses in total - and it still would be only 5€ à. I try to choose the projects which I desperately need and which does lacks financial support.

And EU is dropping the funding from foss projects. Afaik it was almost unique "state level" supporter... So sad (this should be unifying project)

@alaraajavamma i hear you.

5 € a month does not sound much but a lot of underfunded projects have thousands if not hundreds of thousands of users. if a fraction donated, people can at least pay their rent.

on the other hand, this should tell you that the current path is a bad one.

therefore, whoever cant donate to every foss project they use (which means everyone) should email their political representatives now.
