Are any people from #Chicago reading this? My mother in law would really like some Black Forest Cherry cake for Christmas. My wife and I are visiting from Germany at the time and we can bring some of the ingredients. But I'm worried about the liquid ingredients, especially canned cherries.

If you know any good stores that carry morello cherries (Sauerkirschen), I would be very grateful for recommendations.

@draco Also, if they are the same as the sour cherries used in Polish cooking, there are a bunch of Polish delis on the northwest side.

@kaz oh, thanks, that's a very good idea! I'm going to investigate whether Polish cuisine uses the same cherries.

That said, I was banking on the fact that according to my wife, Chicago has a decently-sized population of people with German roots.

@draco Oh I'm sure there is; I'm just Polish so that's where my brain jumped.

Gene's is definitely German, though, so that's a good place to call. If they don't have them, they may be able to direct you somewhere that does.
