Since I only have about 40 followers, I would appreciate as many boosts as possible as it is hurricane related. The Iphone 14 and above has the capability to send messages via satellite. You have to install IOS18 then swipe down from top right to get the utilities screen. You can then do a demo by touching the satellite icon. Evidently it only works if you do not have cell data or wifi available.

@RiBurton it’s worth clarifying that this used to be for emergency SOS only, but iOS 18 added iMessage/SMS support. There is a gateway in Sebring, Florida. If that is impacted, coverage may be limited as it would only be available when a satellite is also in view of the nearest gateways in Mexico and Clifton, TX, so patience may be required.

@RiBurton Adding that I have successfully used satellite texting on a boat in the middle of the Puget Sound.

Your phone will prompt you to point at the sat, or if a sat is not available it will tell you how long to wait.

Sat texting via iPhone is battery hungry. Be prepared before connecting to the satellite by knowing exactly what to say and what you need. You will not receive messages via sat unless you are connected. Use airplane mode when not in use.

Keep portable chargers handy.

@intheseheels Thank you. We’re safe in our banquet hall for our community just south of Punta Gorda, Fl. Winds are about 45-50 mph. We’re very lucky as we have no flooding here and no indication so far of any major damage. Lights are flickering once in a while but still have it so far. We’re pretty well set with standby generator and emergency lights. I served Brats and German potato salad tonight, now I’m drinking a little bourbon.
