Pretty wild to see folks moving quickly from "there are no climate change safe harbors" to "every place is risky these days." I understand where people are coming from on this, but it isn't based in reality in terms of risk thresholds and I fear it lets goons like DeSantis off the hook. Nothing about the last two weeks changes the fact that coastal Florida is fundamentally a riskier place than most other locations in the United States when it comes to climate change adaptation.
You know who does not think risk is spread equally everywhere? Insurance companies. I take no satisfaction in being proven correct over and over again that insurance companies are serving as America's de facto climate adaptation policy makers as insurance reshapes where people can literally afford to live (or not) because the public and private sector cannot get its shit together on the adaptation front.
Once again, insurance companies are only pricing risk in for anticipated payouts for the next year. Behind the scenes they are well aware that places they are writing insurance policies for now will not be insurable in the future. I learned about this at a climate adaptation conference last year and it's lived rent free in my head ever since.
