Fun fact: Using RDP to access #AdobeLightroom 6 on Win7 vm with photos on a samba share is more responsive than using #Digikam 8.2 natively on *nix with photos on NFS.
I think this says a lot about Digikam's scalability.

@ab1wx (1) digikam also uses a sqlite database (can also use MySQL IIRC), I don't know if they include previews in it or not, but it looks like digikam likes to reindex everything waaaay too often, which takes a while with tens of thousands of photos
(2) my interest is in LR 6 because that's the last perpetual license version (and not subscription) and I have one. With that said, I've been meaning to try Lightroom under Wine but haven't gotten around to it.
@ab1wx It looks like it has uses a sqlite db for thumbs as well:
$ ls -lh ~/.digikam
total 2531963
-rw-r--r-- 1 jeffpc jeffpc 144M Sep 19 23:00 digikam4.db
-rw-r--r-- 1 jeffpc jeffpc 32K Sep 19 22:13 recognition.db
-rw-r--r-- 1 jeffpc jeffpc 54M Sep 19 22:13 similarity.db

@ab1wx I thought the perpetual licenses were for both Windows and MacOS. I never really paid attention to it, but I recall seeing a "mac/win" somewhere when I bought it way back when.
Of course, running Windows just for LR isn't really a step forward from running a mac just for LR.
