"Some men just want to watch the world burn." - casually committing blasphemy at @deadline_demoparty 2024, by coding an Amiga-boingball effect for the Atari Falcon 060. Audio: @h0ffman on stage!

@chainq @deadline_demoparty @h0ffman the obvious comeback is to challenge them to make it run on a normal 68000 :p

@wyatt8740 @deadline_demoparty @h0ffman It's my Falcon, and it's my code. πŸ™‚ The core of it started life on the Amiga as a chunky2planar "engine" or '"framework", specifically targeted at AGA/'060 systems and the like. Which is more my jazz, than stock '000 stuff, sorry, but not sorry. πŸ™ƒ Later I ported this "engine" to the Falcon/'060.

But the actual boing-ball code was written at Deadline, and first ran on the Falcon. Because you know... the whole blasphemy and watch the world burn part. πŸ˜… 😈

@wyatt8740 @deadline_demoparty @h0ffman BTW, I'm quite sure something like this effect (and then some) is a no-brainer to do on a stock Falcon for someone into that stuff. I mean, we've already seen DSP accelerated 3D stuff on it which was seriously impressive. And I won't say anything about an ST, because one bad word, and then someone will take it as a challenge... πŸ˜…
@chainq @deadline_demoparty @h0ffman i might have confused it with the ST
but basically the original amiga boing ball was done with a sprite and cleverly cycling through a color palette of mostly the same colours

@wyatt8740 @deadline_demoparty @h0ffman Yup. Actually the original boing ball was done for the ST quite early on, by Atari themselves, and shown around that the ST can match the Amiga's capabilities: https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=27109

What is less well known, is that the boing ball keeps multitasking enabled the Amiga, so you can switch back to Workbench, and it will happily boing away in the background, while you do other stuff. πŸ™ƒ That part is what the ST couldn't match...

@chainq @deadline_demoparty @h0ffman yeah, i've got the boing ball on my a500 (only amiga i can ever afford probably… and forget about affording a falcon). I've heard it said that the reveal of the boing ball going in the background was a big deal at some events
