Erwin is, I believe, the city at which the 2 bridges along I26 in TN washed out. It was just south of this point going north out of #Asheville that we were turned around on... Saturday? Sunday? Can't remember, before we had cell service, when we tried to drive north to Johnson City or Kingsport, looking for a cell signal to let people know we were okay. We had a fistful of phone numbers and messages, to call friends of neighbors to let them know we were all ok.
That didn't happen that day.
Stopped at a rest area (which was closed) on the way back south into AVL. A highly treed site, which ended up being lucky.
@Mikasa4231 This is one of the 4 highways leading out of #Asheville and the #WNC, 3 of which were closed after #Helene. Only I26 south (or East as it's called) remained open.
I40 E&W were both washed out. I40 remains closed with a large rebuild necessary before it can reopen. I40 East is open going toward Raleigh now, and I believe I40 coming toward AVL in that direction was supposed to open last night.
Each of these are important for getting relief supplies (and regular deliveries of food and gasoline!) up into our mountains.
If power can be restored, some stores could reopen, perhaps, even without water.
