Thinking about what to suggest as an alternative for Facebook for non-technical people like my extended family.

First thought is going back to e-mailing lists, but email and even snail mail are so heavily laden with spam and scams. *At least* on Facebook things are marked as sponsored, though there is a rise in FB groups of AI bots posting memes. Email, snail mail, & phone feels like outright scams constantly, being disguised as legitimate businesses.

So what's a safer alternative?? 🤔

If decentralized web stuff, the onboarding has to be as easy as it is to sign up for a for-profit website. I'm just trying to think in super simple actions right now, which is why having a family email list would be my first thought.
Then at the same time, the big email companies are Google and Microsoft, and trying to move others away from *those* would also be a huge challenge.

What about an email client that doesn't put things in your inbox by default... What if it shows a little notification "email received from XYZ subject QWERTY" and email addresses have to be whitelisted? Don't hide incoming mail, but don't have it clutter your inbox as if it has the same priority as everything else.

Second I think an email client should be structured more like a chat app: show "from Rachel" as one "chat session" and can navigate messages there (more like a forum / threads)

That way even if you want messaging from a company, it all goes in the "GamestoreDotCom" email-forum, then clicking into that shows you all the separate email-threads, and all the separate email messages they send don't clutter your entire inbox, hiding messages from your actual human contacts.
@Moosader The Gmail web UI does pretty much the latter, albeit grouping by email thread, not by recipient. I wouldn't want it any other way anymore...

@Moosader

Frankly, I think it might just be as simple #DarkSocial gathering places like group chats.

@Moosader It depends on what is needed. A standard friend connected service with groups and pages, etc. A friend can be anybody clicked on friend button? It grants a following and follows rights at the same? Are there any needs available for these kind of networks nowadays still? Or just the stucked relatives granted the same place? Lots of questions.
