I don’t want a computer with adverts in the task bar or menu, on which I can’t run my own software freely and easily, or which I can’t repair myself.

I don’t want an eReader which snitches on my reading, or which can remove my books.

I don’t want to use a proprietary third party service and app for my dishwasher.

I don’t want a car which can be controlled remotely via someone else’s servers.

@neil unfortunately it is too late, we have somehow accepted (as a society) that these practices are ok. It baffles me why.
@CrackedWindscreen @neil I assume it is because the majority of people who is not into tech does not know it could be better. My husband and I sometimes refer to people as "apple users" when we talk about people who want to create apps, games, etc. but have no clue that what they see as standard behavior still has to be programmed by the devs. What is completely clear to us isn't to them.

@JohannaMakesGames @neil agreed. Think there is a lack of knowledge and also people just trying to get through the day, deciding the things they will pay attention to and what they won't.

There are many times I want to not know stuff and be ignorant.

@CrackedWindscreen @neil It's only too late when you have given up. Don't.
@neil spot on. Enjoyed that post! Regards from an equally grumpy old techie
@neil I have recently bought a smart dishwasher. As I'd expected, the smart functionality is a bit pointless, but to be honest, I bought the one that I did more because I could tell from the license compliance documentation that it was running a Yocto based Linux on an NXP i.MX processor (probably i.MX6). Doing the work I do, I've probably at least talked to the development team and it was a good chance to have another Linux device running in the kitchen. 😂
@neil @brouhaha I don’t want a TV which shoves ads down my throat when in sleep mode and has apps and crapware.

@neil good list ❤️ - one more:

I do not want my TV to take screenshots of everything I watch just to personalize ads that I did not opt-in to: https://mastodon.social/@dangillmor/113205215648124696

@BramVanDriel @neil

Almost in complete agreement.

But having a car that's grown functionally better over the last 4 years, and who I can tell to warm up from my bed, /just/ edges me into hypocrisy.

Comfort is a shoe-in for capitalist hegemony.

@neil
I have an MBA but I'm shocked saddened and angry at the person who thought any of those were sensible ideas. Bigger profits is not a valid excuse for stupid decisions.
