In 2004 I saw the Curiosa Festival in New York (with the Cure, Interpol, Mogwai, the Rapture and others).

We managed to get all the way to the front for Interpol and the Cure. Next to us was a Cure super-fan and her boyfriend. She had a denim jacked with a hand-painted portrait of Robert Smith on the back and told us she was traveling to a few of the festival dates (cont.)

The Cure drop their first new song in 16 years, 'Alone', from forthcoming album Songs of a Lost World

It's the first song from the English goth rock band's forthcoming record, Songs of a Lost World, which is due out in November.

As we waited for Interpol to go on super-fan spotted then-Cure member Perry Bamonte off to side of the stage. She called out to him and he wandered over.

Super-fan asked him to sign her jacket -- he took a look at the jacket and sort of did a mental calculation about how big a fan she must be, asking, "did you paint this yourself?"

She nodded. He said "would you like me to see if the rest of the band can sign it?" She was like, "uh, yeah" (cont)

So Perry wandered off to the back stage area and came back about 15 minutes later with the jacket signed by all of the Cure (I think they were like a 6 piece at that time) including Smith and Simon Gallup. Needless to say, super-fan was overwhelmed. Put everyone nearby in a good mood for the rest of the concert.

Perry is back in the Cure these days after a long absence. Good for him.

Sad to hear that Perry Bamonte passed away over Christmas - my only interaction with him was the thread above - seemed like a sweet guy.
