I agree with every word of this.

It didn’t help that I read this shortly after discovering that LG (the manufacturer of my TV) are planning to roll out adverts in their in built screensavers.

As it happens, I never, never use the ‘smart’ stuff in my TV, preferring an Apple TV instead. But still, it’s shitty.

And what’s the end result? How far does it go? The current crop of CEOs are demanding infinite growth that can’t be sustained. But by the time it’s a problem, they’ll have retired and it’ll be Somebody Else’s Problem.

I use an AppleTV too, but I’ve managed to only buy dumb TVs. I suspect that if I had to replace one, and couldn’t find a suitable screen 2nd hand, I’d have to get a Smart TV, and then find a way of lobotomising it (presumably by not letting it get online?).
@peteralee The LG I bought a few months ago is my first smart TV. I got it primarily because it’s a 60” that was only £400. We hooked ours to the wifi and all that, but almost never see the built in OS anyway.
@DJDarren
That’s reassuring. I had visitions of adverts popping up whenever I turned it on… glad it’s working ok.
