George Lucas got the idea for Princess Leia's iconic "space buns" from Mexican revolutionary women. Specifically Clara de la Rocha, a total badass.

Clara's descendant recounted:

"She crossed a river on horseback…and was able to take out a power station in order to allow the rebel forces to attack during night without being seen."

Just like Leia, eh?

@markwyner I get a big Han Solo vibe from her as well. Thank you for sharing
@gneilyo @markwyner was about to post that

@jenzi @markwyner Chewie got her bandoliers, too.

Just give her the keys to the Millennium Falcon, she'll wrap up this little empire problem in one movie.

@markwyner meanwhile weird nerds (while weeing in bottles mid 'live' stream)... Original Star Wars was never political, only Disney made it woke and about politics.
@markwyner I've always wondered if it was related to the Dama de Elche, wich is a pretty mysterious statue discovered in Spain, but this one sort of makes more sense
@markwyner I have a different idea on the source of Leia's hairbuns. Lucas was a huge fan of British war films of the 1950s. Dambusters was probably his favourite because much of the first Star Wars film was a pretty obvious knock-off. Here is a picture of Mrs Mary Wallis, wife of the inventor of the bouncing bomb. Those aren't Danish pastries strapped to her head.
@markwyner And here's a side-by-side comparison of a big scene from Star Wars and the Dam Busters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNdb03Hw18M

I feel like there might be a little indigenous influence in there too. Young Hopi women have been rocking this hairstyle for a loooong time.
@ipxfong by the way, this Hopi hairstyle is called a "squash blossom." Pretty cool, eh?
@markwyner Arent those ribbons? Not hair?
@rspfau I think there are ribbons around them, yes.

You don't have to be a Star Wars fan to see the massive cultural inspirations that George Lucas immersed into his universe. Jedi scream Japanese samurai influence, while Boba Fett, Cad Bane, and other bounty hunters alike share a western gunslinger feel. Looking at Princess Leia, did you ever wond
