gotta cash in before the bubble bursts!

the writing’s been on the wall that this was poised to happen for ages, but it’s still a great example of how tech companies will promise the world in the beginning then betray everything they claimed to stand for when there’s real money to be made.

@parismarx How did the Fediverse avoid all that?

@toxtethogrady @parismarx
It ain’t over yet. Just because nobody has figured out how to make money by selling out here doesn’t mean nobody will

Certainly Mastodon.social is the biggest prize but I think people still see it is just a marginal geek project

If it became as influential as Twitter, some billionaire would come knocking with money from totalitarians to back him up and who would turn that down?

@AccordionBruce @parismarx Musk already tried that back in 2023, but was unable to get any traction. Meanwhile, Mark Zuckerberg admitted to Verge Magazine that @threads was trying through its algorithm to downrank political speech (in favor of gaming goggles?). Banning Russians from Meta is a more effective maneuver that @zuck is now imposing because Russia is still trying to buy influence and spread disinformation. With @threads sharing @Fediverse content, there is always the possibility @zuck could try to gain influence here.
