(Sadly, this story may not be true. My mom says she never heard of it, and the layout of our house didn't really favor checking the TV every 15 minutes for updates. It sounds like something that my dad might have talked about doing, or maybe did once or twice as a test, rather than a regular thing).
What is true is that we had one of the first teletext TVs: the “remote" was actually a gizmo with three rotary switches for dialing up page numbers, tethered to the TV by a thick cable!
