"Get on board with AI or get left behind!"

I already got "left behind" by NFTs and the metaverse in just the last few years, and it didn't seem to do me any harm.

@tomw But see what harm it did to the Metaverse and NFTs. That being said... See that some harm comes to "AI".
@tomw at least you didn't lose $40bn like Meta on the metaverse πŸ˜‚
@hyde @tomw For that much they would have made more profit building an entire modern rail network across America and instead they remade VRML from 1997
@Kroc Or help people around the world with water and food supply @tomw
@hyde @tomw well we know that both the metaverse and crypto were a complete waste of money as well as also helping to crash the biosphere and can't see that the LLM bubble will be any different: OpenAI still seems to be a bottomless pit for VC and Petrostate investors but I can't see any revenues coming in at the other end.
@tomw
And what about Serverless Computing and Blockchain? And Cloud? My god there were so many "THIS is THE thing forever!"-Hypes that came up and were replaced by the next one which was THE BEST NEW THING after the invention of sliced bread.
@dickenhobelix
@momo @tomw In the amazing words from Avenue Q: "Except for death and paying taxes everything in life is only for now..."
@momo @dickenhobelix Cloud still didn't quite die but it has been a while since I heard anyone banging on about "serverless"
@tomw @momo I enjoy the fact that I mostly work in an industry that is lagging behind roughly 10 years. There are some competitors in the market that currently brag about their cloud and edge support. Still waiting if someone there will restart the blockchain Dumpsterfire πŸ˜‚
@dickenhobelix
We had a few consultant who tried to pitch us something with being a serverless computing solution and they are always irritated when I ask questions like "Okay, that means the application runs on the clientside? Do we have to deploy stuff on our workstations? I wonder because you talked about a browser interface..." or "Okay, when you say your serverless application runs on a cloud environment... is there really a cloud that computes stuff without any server hardware? Does it run wireless in thin air?"
@tomw
@tomw so many trendy digital things I've been left behind with too! and, yeah, I'm fine.

@tomw

I feel as though being left behind has done me more good than harm. I don’t cotton to being a beta tester without being asked if I’d like to be a beta tester.

@tomw
I know the feeling, but I think we can see real-world promise from AI applications. (Obviously, some are quite the mis-fires... as always with something new.)

FWIW, I was "in" on bitcoin, "out" of that iteration of metaverse, "out" of NFTs, but I'm "in" on AI.

Some fads really do show real value on their merits.

Others ... require that you drink the punch. Telling them apart is important!

@tomw
and bitcoin and all the other variations of pretend money whose only purpose is to massively waste energy
@tomw this time is different. This time there will be killer robots.
@tomw
And I thought I am getting old but it seems missing out in these things is ok. Thanks 😊
