Election Officials Urge USPS to Fix Mail Delivery Issues That Could Impact Voting

Election officials across the country are urging the United States Postal Service (USPS) to fix what they’ve identified as significant issues with mail delivery that could impact voting in the Nov. 5 election.

@GottaLaff what hasn't he been fired? Like serious question.
@Sablebadger @GottaLaff Biden can’t just fire DeJoy, no matter how much that needs doing. I guess it just wasn’t a priority until it’s too late. Many of us who did significant business with the USPS thought DeJoy’s mission was to screw things up to both move deliveries over to private for-profit entities (in which he has interests) and to screw up vote-by-mail so Trump could crow about it. Here’s a pretty good summary of how the USPS Board works: https://www.palmbeachpost.com/story/opinion/columns/2024/04/28/why-president-biden-cant-fire-the-postmaster-general-of-u-s-postal/73443709007/
A Ballot didn't mail out in time? Too bad! Biden can't fire the postmaster. Here's why.

Joe Biden might be the world's most powerful person but he still can't fire a postmaster general. The Civics Project column explains why.

@MarkAB @Sablebadger Right, it is not up to Biden. I've posted about this repeatedly, and recently, but here's a quickie:

@[email protected] Replacing DeJoy is paramount, but there are a bunch of pieces and steps to that goal. Current piece of the puzzle appears to be (Sept 12, 2024): "[I]n July, Biden nominated Democrat Val Demings and Republican businessman William Zollars to fill the final two slots on the board. Whether to gain more control over mail in ballots ahead of this election, or to possibly remove DeJoy - these two will complete the Biden takeover of the board of governors and ultimately give him more control of the USPS. The Senate has yet to confirm them." ALSO. If you're getting a mail ballot and are worried about it being late or getting lost when returning, you should drop off at an official drop box for your county or whatever. Don't actually mail it back. This isn't going to help for receiving the mail ballot, of course, if you're in an area with sketchy service. https://www.muellershewrote.com/p/its-time-for-dejoy-to-go?r=18s1wm&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email&triedRedirect=true

@GottaLaff @MarkAB @Sablebadger As of a couple of days ago, Biden named Marty Walsh and Val Demmings to the Board of Governors to (IIRC), seven Ds and two Rs.

I believe a few others had left at one point, which is when Biden was able to appoint new directors. As Laffy said elsewhere here, the last Democrat before Biden's appointments this week, leaned into the Rs. Which is why we still have DeJoy.

HOWEVER: Congress still has to approve Val and Marty. No idea how long that will take.

@CharJTF @GottaLaff @MarkAB thank you! I wondered if it was something like that. Appreciate the info.
@Sablebadger @CharJTF @GottaLaff No problem. The USPS has long been a quagmire, with many of the Postmasters General running their districts like personal fiefdoms. I hope that part of it is better now, but any improvements at that level are probably being offset by DeJoy’s sabotage.
