My imaginery view when someone says that #Hannover has no #metro… @uestra #hannoverliebt
@Squig if only they could agree on how to call it/the signage. At Hannover Central you have signs pointing you to the tram using a "U"....
@mxk It‘s not us so much, its actually DB.
@mxk but also, it‘s pretty simple. It‘s a U for underground stations and systems that run independent (unabhöngig) from car traffic like the Hamburg Hochbahn. For Stadtbahn systems (premetro/metro legere, think Green line in Boston dear USAiains) it‘s as follows:
@mxk U for underground sections, tram for overground sections in street traffic. Or do these look like traditional modern streetcars to you, given their length and where they are going? #Stadtbahn #TW2000 #TW3000 #trains #citytrains #metrolegere #premetro

@Squig so, from a technical perspective those are "light rail" or tram cars. Even though they don't run on paved roads most of the time.

My issue is: if something uses one nomenclature in DB-Navigator and alike, I should be able to find it, following this classification.
If I don't know that Hannover doesn't have a subway, how should I figure out, that what is called a tram/STR can be found when following the "U" signage?

@mxk it‘s the same in all other 🇩🇪cities with a Stadtbahn system(except for Frankfurt, maybe),so you‘d know that from travelling around, maybe?

The problem is basically that DB decided to differentiate between overground Stadtbahn systems & underground ones.

I don‘t think we do these systems justice,in any case,by insisting on the word‚tram‘,even if legally they are. It might make more sense to just establish a 4th urban rail category,in multiple languages(as you have in🇩🇪&🇫🇷,just not in signage).

@mxk In Hanover no one calls it ‚tram, or ‚Straßenbahn’, also.
@Squig I know. It just just use signs calling it "Stadtbahn" and everything would be less confusing.
And yes, I know that other German cities are similarly confused.
I love the Stuttgart solution of writing "Stadtbahn" underneath the "U" on their logo.

@mxk gauge size has nothing to do with it, most stadtbahn systems are standard gauge, in Germany only Bielefeld is not, I think (excluding tram systems that might call themselves stadtbahn but aren‘t underground)
@mxk there‘s even a connection to DB‘s system from the Hanover Stadtbahn (but voltage is obviously different, so it‘s not super practical 😅)
@mxk does DB use Stuttgart‘s signage in their stations?
@Squig not sure, current Stuttgart Central isn't exactly a good example for a functioning train station anyways 😂
