I have to think that at some point there will be enough automation and practical AI in our world that there simply won't be enough work for people to do and we'll have to quickly restructure our economy so that livelihood is not tied to employment.

I know I'm far from the first person to talk about this, and I've been thinking about it for years, but once in a while I see AI being implemented in more and more gradually practical ways that the thought crosses my mind: "The people who used to have to do that manually are now going to have to either get more/different work or they're just going to have easier jobs, and we all know which way it's going to go. But eventually something has to give on a big scale." I think I'll live to see how it plays out, however it plays out.

Just in general, I see humanity's future as very dystopian in some ways (e.g. effects of climate change), and very utopian in other ways (technology). Many aspects of life will probably go to one extreme or the other, depending a lot on political outcomes.

@westmeadow I think the long-term assuming more and more can be automated, we're definitely going to need something like UBI. I'm sure the rich and powerful will wait until society is on the edge of collapse from unemployment before we move in a good direction though.

I'm pretty hopeful humanity will /eventually/ get to a point where instead of having to work just to survive most people are free to do the things they are passionate about and let computers do everything else. It just might be a rough journey to that point.

@nephatrine This sounds highly plausible to me!
