We had a great day dancing in Lincoln yesterday, and discovered this sign advertising a new unit of measurement. The Cuthberts Yard is defined as “the length of one of our long sticks” (762mm IIRC). Presumably there’s also a Cuthberts Foot defined as “the length of one of our short sticks”.

@RedCuthbert Every time @berkeleymorris needs more sticks (typically multiple years after the previous occasion), there's a scramble as people try to remember how long a Berkeley Yard is. Fortunately, we typically have at least one of the old sticks around to serve as a template. Plus some members with long memories of various aspects of the stick crafting art.

We do much the same. I was once asked and gave a precise answer as a complete guess, then measured one to make sure I was about right (what’s an inch more or less between friends?) and found I’d been millimetre accurate - talk about luck! The length quoted above is almost certainly wrong.
