Drew but 7/27/25 GA ➡️ Reprise@mielcarz @chris I am beyond fine with Fishman not liking Pearl Jam and feel no need to defend them, but calling them "formulated riffs" is a good way to say you haven't listened to them much because their output is all over the fucking map - way more than almost any other rock band of the last 35 years that has attained their level of success (which admittedly is a very short list)
Chop@drewphish @mielcarz @chris I think Fish might change his tune on some of this with a more recent interview. Like most of us, the band (or at least Trey) has taken a broader view of what is good music. Trashing someone like Madonna who resonates on such a grand scale and created a soundtrack for so many people’s lives just seems silly. Same with Pearl Jam. This isn’t to say popular = great. Some pop might as well be manufactured in a lab. That doesn’t apply here.
@chopaganda @mielcarz @chris Fair point about the possibility of changing his tune more recently. And yes, poplar does not equal good and popular also does not equal bad. There is so much formulaic bullshit art that was essentially created in a lab to feed capitalism and Madonna and Pearl Jam ain't it! Finally, formulaic is not always bad. AC/DC wrote one song 90 times. I adore that song and that song has directly affected my musicianship.
@drewphish @mielcarz @chris Bringing this full circle, I’ll argue to the end that the first two Oasis albums are fantastic and worthy of accolades. They took that late 80s shoegazey alternative sound and made it pop accessible. Other bands might have been doing similar things, but none as well.
Then the press made them out to be bigger than they were, like they were the only great British pop/rock band since the Beatles, and every subsequent album was a retread of the first two.
@chopaganda @mielcarz @chris I fully missed all of Oasis except for the hits. At Northwestern I used to listen to literally hours of music a day, every day, with a huge rotating circle of friends who were music junkies. Oasis was put on exactly zero times by anyone ever. It's kind of funny that I actually know them for being famous.
@drewphish @mielcarz @chris assuming you’re not allergic to Noel‘s voice, I bet you’d enjoy Definitely Maybe. Even today. I listened to it the other day, and it still holds up as a great pop/rock album.

@drewphish @chris @mielcarz I just mean a heavy droning underlying guitar sound that was reminiscent of a lot of late 80s alternative. Maybe I’m going too far and calling at shoegaze as I know the shoegaze fans really love their shoegaze.

@tuneslist @chris @drewphish @mielcarz never got into them. I always associate Blur with that wave of generic 90s rock bands like Matchbox Twenty, Third-Eye Blind, 3 Doors Down, etc. Probably an ignorant statement.
@chopaganda @chris @drewphish @mielcarz Blur has some incredible early albums, particularly Leisure, Modern Life, Parklife, and The Great Escape ~ of course Damon Albarn's spinoff Gorillaz has also been huge, and I'd put On Melancholy Hill up there with the greater songs ever written
@tuneslist @chopaganda @drewphish @mielcarz I overlooked Blur when they were most popular. It wasn't until TAB covered Clint Eastwood that I gave either Blur or Gorillaz much attention, but I like both bands now.

@tuneslist @chris @drewphish @chopaganda @mielcarz Love Blur, but came to them much later. The thinking man’s Oasis. Stronger overall career. Fully doubt a new Oasis record would be half as good as Darren or the Magic Whip.
But not sure they have two complete albums as strong as the first two Oasis records. Definitely have nostalgia bias with Oasis that doesn’t apply to blur.
