Ah, it's sadly a shortcut visual for diseased ones in the story.

Now I’m curious how common pet rats are in Japan. Changes how they are depicted a bit.

Also we had four big boys. Two pound big black rats. Rats aren’t scary:)

(Not that I’m saying that anyone should go pick up wild ones. They will fight you. But they will run away first.)
