TechAltar — Why the most expensive phones sell the best

There is a huge increase in the sales of flagship phones, premium models and ultra premium smartphones. This trend is called premiumization and in many countries, ultra premium devices completely dominate the market. What's driving this trend?

@Techaltar Unfortunately you fail to mention that the prices of the first iPhones were all subsidised. The 500$ price tag came with an expensive contract. Apple used to have close ties with their partners like Telekom in Germany or AT&T in the US back in the day. The later prices you list are without a contract.

You could still get a cheap or even free iPhone with an expensive contract today.

@Techaltar similar reasons for why small phones are so uncommon I think
@Techaltar I knew it. They got rid of the headphone jacks to sell you the matching earbuds in a bundle for their premium phones. Latest phone with the criteria of ‘has headphone jack’, ‘OLED’, & ‘can unlock the bootloader’ literally *only* left me with Sony’s Xperia line.

@Techaltar 5:30 I think that you made a video years ago saying exactly that, that flagships don't matter because made range is very good.

It's amazing that if you buy a s24, a flagship, you're at the bottom of the market. Impressive image.

@Mai9 @Techaltar Still, that was for the wealthiest markets. I wonder if the midrange assumption holds true for the rest of the world.
