So... I could use the opinions of some folks with experience in #canadian #labourLaws and or #union experience.

Would it be expected to have to repay the employer for the cost of their medical benefits and insurance during a medical leave?

Example: Joe, permenant, full-time salaried union employee took a 4 month leave to battle cancer. Upon his return, he was garnished $2500 to repay the employer the cost of their benefits. The benefits are a part of Joe's contract, and the employer has *always* covered 100% of the cost (Joe has paid $0 over 10 years).

Does this sound on-the-level? Is this a normal, expected thing?

Thanks #fedi folks, you're the best! Feel free to boost to help me find some #help!

@sb my spouse the payroll manager says that the length of time when paid leave transfers over to ei should be clearly specified in the contract.
When on EI the employee would be responsible for both - but the time frame you mention sounds too short.

@furicle
Correct - in this instance the employee was not on EI, but made a claim for STD through employer-peovided benefits.

Thanks for looking into it - I appreciate it.

@sb I was on short-term leave from my job, just shy of 3 months. Wasn't garnished any salary at all. I do have coverage through work. I would say to check the employment agreement and any terms of coverage, but I Do Not see paying your employer back being a thing. They have insurance to get their money back.
