Wonder what this is all about?

#L1ca #L1ON #league1canada #CanPL? #CanadaFC

Found it in an article about the Barrie mayor using his strong mayor powers for something.

The game is afoot. Or should I say afooty?
Intriguing. The did themselves proud this year and last.

@intothewestaway I was looking around all of the #L1ON websites seeing about ticket prices and merch and stuff. I don't know how these teams make money, but it doesn't appear to be from having fans.

The fact that they're looking for a 2,500 seat stadium, and not just a field tells me they want room for fans.

If they want that much room for fans, that does make me wonder if they're looking to leap out of league 1.

We'll have to wait and see though.

@intothewestaway I don't know what the economics of success looks like for #CanPL, but 2,500 seems like the right starting point for new teams, although I hope for bigger numbers long term.
@hewer_of_code
The average is now trending to double that for #CanPL. Barrie is a good draw. I imagine there are a few deep pockets in the King City to Muskoka crowd who could spare a couple of million $ a year, no questions asked. Infrastructure, not just the field, but training, sports physio, places for players to live (that's a thing) etc. The easy part is getting a brand. L1 is untapped and I don't think is ready for the consequences of the next level. Witness Peteborough Electric FC.

@hewer_of_code

Halifax is tops with attendance average 6,100. Forge with 5,200.

@intothewestaway Even Vancouver FC has already surpassed the 2,500 mark, and that's with them playing in the Whitecaps' backyard, so things can grow pretty quickly.

York has been a laggard, but the new ownership seems to be correcting that. They've had massive yoy growth.

My thought is that a 2,500 seater would be fairly easy to get off the ground, but plan it with growth in mind, so that they can easily add capacity as needed.

@intothewestaway @hewer_of_code it’s interesting. I have friends involved with that club.

I’m a member of the TSS Rovers Supporters Trust and I can tell you the League 1 economics are hard. Mostly sponsorship keeps our operational costs covered.

I don’t think CPL is doing well at the gate. VFC does not have 2500 at every game and they don’t count the gate.

CSB is what keeps this league going, I believe.

@chriscorrigan @hewer_of_code

Thanks Chris, good perspective. We are fortunate with Caretaker Bob Young as an owner. Plus sharing facilities with the ticats keeps the costs down.

@hewer_of_code @intothewestaway I have no idea how VFC is doing it. And having the same ownership owning PFC too must be stretching that whole ownership group. Both of those teams have a decent chance to succeed but the clubs aren’t building culture and community ownership very well.

They should have named VFC for Langley or the Valley and let the club be a proud rep of that region. Calling it VFC set them off on the back foot.

@chriscorrigan @intothewestaway I'd been wondering if I could believe my eyes for the VFC attendance numbers. It didn't look like there was that many people there, but I thought maybe it was because everyone was on the other side, behind the cameras. I guess they're counting giveaways, even if nobody shows up.
@hewer_of_code
The Vancouver crowds appear hot and cold. I thought they would draw bigger.
Will see what York is like this Friday. The players deserve better. The new coaching has improved the squad. Lots of 🇲🇽 players and of course coach.
@chriscorrigan
@intothewestaway @hewer_of_code yes. The practice in the CPL is to count tickets not the gate. And the team has done many things poorly including being located soooooo far away from its core market. Imagine a team in Oshawa calling itself Toronto Soccer Club and playing in a temporary stadium with no cover a 45 minute drive out of the city or 2 hours on public transit.

@chriscorrigan @intothewestaway

The Cavs announced a regular season record attendance of 5,043 tickets sold. Judging from what I saw on the stream, those were real tickets, not giveaways.

@intothewestaway @hewer_of_code Cavs, Halifax, and Ottawa I think are good draws.
@hewer_of_code
That's the important part. Also, simple things like good location for a field that people can get to is important. THF is on bus, cycle routes. Residential neighborhood with lots of sports flags up (apparently there's another "football" team in Hamilton, who knew? 😆)

@intothewestaway King is sparsely populated, but there's a lot of money there. This is where Leon of #CanWNT is from, which is the Leon of Leon's the furniture store. They've def got the money, but maybe they'd invest in a NSL team first (which would be just as good).

I read a tiny bit about Peterborough, but didn't get what actually happened there.

@hewer_of_code

Peterborough ownership, from what I read earlier, over extended themselves. Had a (the) highest payroll. Attracted names, started with good marketing, but couldn't sustain the costs. Pro sports is not for the faint hearted.

I do know about King City/Vaughan area and Leon. Mainly from the political world. So many developers drooling at private Fordfests, I imagine.
