Is there some pedagogical benefit in using symbols instead of the conventional letters?
@locallytrivial Yes, good question! If ask a question like "Does u + v = v + u?" sudents will immediately say yes, because addition is commutative. But when I ask them "Does ☆ + ▢ = ▢ + ☆?" the very question of what it means to add ▢ and ☆ becomes an issue for discussion, which is what I want.
