"How do I automatically label items in an enumerate list?"

500 answers: "Why would you do that? Don't you know it's brittle? Here's an alternative answer that doesn't do what that, because you're clearly too stupid to know what you're asking."

1 person, a Godsend: "here u go"

Tech people undefeated in being condescending about ~everything. Thank you, One Person, for answering what was asked.
@thephd i had an argument on SO about this being bad & got told off by a guy saying that the condescending answer is directly encouraged by the rules

@whitequark @thephd Ah, then the rules are bad and need to be changed!

(Somehow I'm sure that's what the SO guy had in mind, much to their discredit.)

@whitequark @thephd yes: the rules encourage people answering questions to assume that the question is bad. This is one of several reasons I stopped posting in Stack Overflow.

@thephd

Here, take this bash script that generates #define s

@thephd stackoverflow.com in 1 toot.

@thephd looks back at old answers ugh

there's a very specific flavour of cringe comedy i also hate associated with SO

e.g. "I cannot guarantee your personal safety if you use this kind of thing in code other people have to maintain"

i didn't add that because i actually thought it was funny, even at the time
i added it because the social contract of SO required the presence of a joke to make the "direct" answer acceptable enough to tick, it gives it a Fool's Shield it shouldn't need

and in words like those because programmer humour is fucking horrible :( and cannot allow for subtlety
