TL;DR: If you’re moving from Patreon, please at least look at Tipee instead of SubscribeStar. everything is horrible.

This time, it seems that #Patreon actually means it when it wants to disable per-creation billing. Not that surprising, since they’ve tried before, with explanations which clearly show they don’t understand that their business model is aggregating small payments to minimize transaction fees, and have publicly said that they’d “rather have … fewer, but truly life-changed creators rather than a lot of creators making a few dollars“. So they actively dislike most of their users. They just choose to blame Apple this time, when neither me nor the creators I support there have ever used the Apple Store to handle Patreon payments.

So now, creators and their supporters are scrambling to find an alternative platform. Some have moved to #SubscribeStar, which seems to be the proverbial Nazi bar, and is thus not getting any of my money.

I’ve suggested #Tipee to some creators, but to my knowledge none has even looked at it. Even though it says the right things and explicitly allows per-creation billing.

I know @davidrevoy uses Tipee - do you have a short summary of your experience using it?

@creideiki Hey, Tipeee, as far as I know was a 1:1 copy in the big picture of Patreon; with the main difference was about no transaction fee for paying in Euro, and a UX translated. Something that Patreon did catch up later; so now, not a lot of differences.
They don't have a good reputation: they are enabler of toxic cultures (not moderating their 'creators'; as long as they produce money, they are happy to take their 5% commission; so it is a home for fakenews, conspiracy, etc as well).
@davidrevoy That's a shame. They look like they care about their creators, and I didn't find anything like that immediately, but I guess that's because they're small enough that it's not a public scandal.
@creideiki yes, maybe the controversy got big only in France (where Tipeee is really used by Youtubers, for the French translation of interface and paiement in Euro). The big scandal happened during the pandemy, when the platform was used to fund conspiracy movies, and Tipeee just were ok with that. I quickly ran a search; and this type of post were legion back then: https://techunwrapped.com/creators-ask-their-supporters-to-stop-using-tipeee-on-tipeee/
