Between their constant predatory pricing tactics, anti-consumer business practices, and cozying up with governments that actively repress freedom of speech, anyone still supporting the Apple ecosystem is personally complicit in creating a truly terrible internet

But Fedi isn't ready for that conversation

@lety general consumers have been complicit in making the Internet worse for decades https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September
Eternal September - Wikipedia

@antagonist Eternal September is just antipopulist rhetoric from tech elites who don't like associating with common folk and also totally unrelated to Apple charging both tenancy fees and property tax for the privilege of trying to make a living using their internet browser
@lety my point is that the individual users don’t know any better - they’re just trying to live their lives and use the technology. I’m no fan of Apple but it’s hard to blame Average Joe for existing in the ecosystem when the other options are Android/Google and obscure shit most people haven’t heard of. In this case, I think Twitch just passed on the expense to the user - so now I don’t buy Twitch subs on an iPhone or iPad.

@antagonist I'm complicit in American war crimes by proxy of paying taxes to a government that sends missiles to a country that drone strikes children, and in November, I'll be complicit in casting a vote for a corrupt cop. And so, I speak up against these things and take action to reduce my complicity in these horrible things.

My criticism is of folks on Fedi who simultaneously hold the beliefs that freedom of speech and consumer rights are good while also cheering on Apple's new product launches a few months ago and throwing thousands of dollars into Tim Cook's pockets, all without experiencing a modicum of cognitive dissonance.

There's no ethical consumption under capitalism, so Average Joe is excused from being unethical. What I don't excuse Average Joe of is their behaving as if they're blameless for the failings of causes they claim to support.
