ZagorathI could be wrong, but I believe โaโ is often used in African American English (whichโand again, I could be wrongโI believe is the preferred term these days by linguists, rather than AAVE) even when the proceeding word begins with a vowel. Considering the guy in the picture is black and, based on the fact that heโs standing in front of NBA signs, presumably American, using โaโ in this meme makes sense.
If we are getting in the weeds here, the is a more appropriate article since the most valuable is not longer indefinite. In an AAVE context & using inappropriate article โa/anโ, I would assume โyou a MVPโ omitting the copula, not conjugating it like โyou are a MVPโ.

And yes, youโre definitely right that โtheโ would be more appropriate for standard American (and British, and Australian, etc.) English.
