So I’ve been using Microsoft Stream at work to auto-caption videos. Part of my job is quality assurance so I double-check the captions for errors.

One recent annoyance is that the captioning software censors some words, replacing them with asterisks. One word in particular that has been a thorn in my side is the word “nipple”. I have had to work on several BREASTFEEDING videos. Needless to say, I’ve been retyping in the word “nipple” a lot.

Come to today, I’m working on a video about transgender and non-binary folks. The speaker said, “There is no such thing as straight sex and gay sex.” Lo and behold Microsoft in their infinite wisdom decided to censor the words “gay sex”. “Straight sex” is uncensored.

I’m fucking livid, but I have no real way to contact Microsoft on this. But, mark it down and spread the word, Microsoft are fucking homophobic prudes.

@RC holy fuck, that's wild
the intention put into that selection is astonishing
@RC I guess its using the censor marks it learned on the Internet.
@dg3hda @RC No its not. There's a far right wing megachurch in Washington state that a lot of Microsoft employees belong to and which has a large say in decisions like this.
@celesteh @RC that world actually require people doing something - while it's easy to check the internet for words which are often censored. Sounds easier to me (although the decision to do it might originate there?)
@RC this just really makes me even happier i switched to linux mint when i did. fuck microsoft
@RC that's also pretty ableist because if you hear it you need to see it too otherwise it's not completely identical

@tauon @RC

Right, that's what I was gonna say; I'm flabberghasted whenever the idea of censoring captions even comes up as remotely a good one.

@amin @tauon @RC

exactly— if you're not censoring the audio, why would you censor the captions? aren't they supposed to be exactly what the audio says???

@tauon @RC This has been my position on this absolute policy failure. YouTube does it, too!

It's got this infantilizing tone of "oh, don't you worry yourself about what nasty things they *actually*, you wouldn't want to read those bad words, anyway."

@RC I was gonna say to report this to the Microsoft inclusion and diversity team…………
But they all got fired last month
@fuchsiii @RC really?
Microsoft lays off its DEI team as fired staff complain diversity ideals were 'no longer business-critical'

The tech company's reported decision to sack its internal DEI team led the team's leader to slam the company, claiming the brand ceased caring as it w...

Daily Mail
@fuchsiii @RC okay, yet another reasons to boycott them...
@RC Wow, it doesn’t have a setting to turn off censorship?
@JetForMe It doesn’t in Microsoft Stream. I have to manually change everything.
@RC I had the same problem once with a university which shall be nameless - I was collaborating on research involving LGBTQ culture and their bots kept blocking my emails containing the word "lesbian" 🤣
@RC it's pretty stupid to censor transcriptions. if someone said it, it should be written down. like what, are you gonna censor the person speaking too?

Yikes. @shanselman I know this isn't your group but could you please pass the word?

It's a really bad look for Microsoft in general. I've often pointed people to Microsofts excellent AI Impact Assessment resources and the Responsiable AI Toolbox but stuff like this gives the impression that it's just PR work rather than practices that get consistenlty applied internally. And, if the underlying models that Microsoft Stream is using are shared across groups, then this kind of anti-gay bias may well be showing up in other tools.

@RC

@thenexusofprivacy @RC sure email me scottha@ Microsoft. It’s likely a false positive through the base models anti-bias tech that is tuned up too much. There are knobs that change the “how paranoid” should the filter be. There’s no intent or conscious evil behind this even though it feels and seems gross on its face. It’s a constant balancing act. Email me and I’ll make sure the right people see it! Promise.
@shanselman @[email protected] thanks Scott. I’ll email you tomorrow when I have access to my work PC.

@RC

In a way it's arguably worse that they're servicing the strange needs of homophobic prudes and in so doing ignoring principles they likely understand perfectly well, for commercial purposes.

A new twist on enshittification?

@RC
So the sentence came out as ‘there’s no such thing as straight sex’?

@FerdinandWeisenhorn “there is no such thing as straight sex or *** ***.”

I would have laughed my ass of if it just said there is no such thing as straight sex, hahahah

@RC Wow. That is extremely unprofessional for them to do that because you're supposed to be captioning stuff exactly how you want. It should be up to the user to censor it, Microsoft shouldn't get to bloody decide. 😡

Just one giant gaping rectum of a company.

@RC I bet a customer that pays way more asked Microsoft to censor a bunch of things and so they just shipped that for everyone
@RC Can you use whisper.cpp? I use that locally to make transcripts and it doesn't censor anything (it's open source). Assuming you're using Windows I think there are pre-built binaries on GitHub.
@RC the fact it auto censors AT ALL feels ableist imo, like patronising people who rely on captions

@RC oh fun... I work a lot with nipples myself when I rebuild bike wheels. My other hobby is going outside with my camera to take nice pictures of hooters, titties, boobies and other beautiful birds 🤣

TIL sperm transfer between the cock and the hen occurs by cloacal contact...

I highly suggest you read this toot from work and hopefully trigger as many stupid content filters and alerts as possible 😁

@RC oh shit I actually didn't read past the gay sex part, that is really fucked up.

@RC or ...
Microsoft is a company that tailors their products to their customers needs. So I assume most Microsoft customers are offended by the words gay sex.

I assume you also stopped using Microsoft products.

@RC YouTube does this too with their autogenerated captions (though not quite to this extent.... yet) and it's fucking infuriating.
@RC Aight, imma uninstall Windows
@RC yeah, sounds about right. they only care about lgbtq rights when its convenient for them. they are just a big corporation that only cares for money and not people. mabye find different software if you can
@RC Campaign to drop all MS products at work, due to this type of liability potential!
@RC I am hard of hearing and have to use captions on everything. I'm seeing this behavior on more and more platforms that censor the words in the captions, even though the audio is not. It is a befuddling choice that those who need captions accept a censored version of the world, especially hiding what you are describing.

@RC I recently interviewed a sex worker for an article and used the Microsoft Teams transcript during the call. The result had several words edited out, one of them even was "porn" – the topic of the interview.

Worrisome to think about how tech companies bake their weird morals into products, even on content that's not even public.

@RC Awful. I've been calling it the Disneyfication of tech but yeah actually they're homophobes and they affect hundreds of millions of people around the world with their software choices.
