"I think it's possible to both enjoy the world of 'Harry Potter' and recognize that its creator is really not a nice person, despite the lovely world she's created.I think it's quite reasonable and urgently necessary to guide children through that complexity."

Should Your Child Read Harry Potter?

A brief viewpoint.

Charlotte's Web Thoughts
@charlotteclymer same thing with Neil Gaiman I guess. Humans are complicated.

@charlotteclymer Sorry but I don't think it's possible to enjoy it anymore. I can enjoy works made by shitty people, but not if that shitty person is constantly, actively using her HUGE influence to try to remove my rights or the rights from people I love and putting them in real danger. And saying that the people who still enjoy her works support her views.

Also the books aren't that great, better go watch The Owl House or Little Witch Academia. Similar setting, but a lot better.

@charlotteclymer It's funny, because I thought of Harry Potter as a *GREAT* trans allegory until JKR transformed into Umbridge.

@charlotteclymer
As an adult with adult sensibilities, the knowledge of Rowling's hate has tainted the entire series for me, and made it impossible for me to enjoy anything related to it any longer.

It also makes it difficult to see people being active fans and not wonder if they might, possibly, agree with her views.

That said, I attempt to not assume anything about people who enjoy HP, but I am more cautious around them.

It's hard to enjoy art when you learn the artist is a shitty person.

@realtegan @charlotteclymer
Yep. When I was a kid we had Cosby's "Fat Albert" comedy album, and we listened to it 1M×, quoted it, and belly-laughed at it.

I read the entire HP series to my son , even though by the final book, he was plenty old enough to read it himself.

You can look back sentimentally at the enjoyment you had, but not with the love you had for the work before you knew the person behind it is broken. It's nostalgia for the days when you could truly enjoy it.

@charlotteclymer

It's rough. I rather like Wil Wheaton's take on the "artist vs their art" question.

I have more of an opinion question for you. When fans of things hear about misconduct happening on sets/behind-the-scenes are they allowed to still enjoy the thing? Or should it be boycotted complete…

@charlotteclymer I've had an easier time of it because my kids have lost interest in Harry Potter, partly (though not entirely) due to her ongoing transphobia
@charlotteclymer - If you get second hand books and dont buy merch, i agree. But JK has said that all the money she makes from that series is proof shes right. So under no circumstances would I buy anything with the HP brand on it, for as long as she gets 1c of that money.

@charlotteclymer The books are problematic in other ways, with racist undertones (goblins, house elves, racial stereotypes) and trivialization of child abuse. My kids figured that out for themselves.

These days, I enjoy the world via fanfic, primarily trans-themed (what sweet revenge) but also garden variety from people who recognize bigotry and are, frankly, *much* better writers than JKR.

@charlotteclymer Charlotte, her lovely world has slavery.
