Soldering people: I’ve got a TS80p, I have good solder and flux. I have two types of tips. I am still shit at soldering. I want to be adequate at soldering.

Should I get a different soldering iron?

No I have not heard of a bad workman blaming their tools

@yezzer that one may be junk. Does it use a standard series of tips? If it did, bin the ones it came with and buy the genuine HAKKO/Pace/JBC tips for the iron even if it cost more than the iron itself. Good solder? Try Kester 63/37 “44”. Do you have brass wool tip cleaner? If marginal power, a wet sponge may be cooling your iron too much (and smells bad). After that just practise. Always apply solder to the joint not the tip. More flux is never bad as long as you clean it off when done.

@aeberbach I'm not sure what standard tips are like, they look like this?
It's meant to be a good soldering iron.. but perhaps not for beginners?

Solder - think I can't use leaded in UK? Is there a good non-leaded version?

@yezzer hmm - they don’t look like tips compatible with any other. No experience of that iron, it might be good. I’m skeptical about stereo jacks handling 30W though, maybe the socket is custom with multiple wipers? Sorry I can’t say much about no-lead solder, tried it and didn’t like it.
