The full IBM Cost of a Data Breach report is worth the email address it takes to get it. It’s loaded with useful data, but here are the highlights for you:

-AI and automation can save millions in breach costs

-The Middle East could overtake the U.S. for highest average breach cost

-The most effective attack vectors & controls

-Full recovery is sadly rare

Data Breach Cost Nears $5 Million, But AI Helps A Lot: IBM

IBM’s 2024 Cost of a Data Breach report includes one particularly interesting data point: AI and automation can lower the average data breach cost by $2 million.

@pshread does it explain what the split in cost saving of AI vs Automation is or are they bundled together?
@Wil bundled together but there's this graphic that might shed some light on that: https://thecyberexpress.com/wp-content/uploads/factors-that-reduced-breach-costs.jpg
@pshread thanks, feels pretty dubious science to me - the link between pen testing and breach cost seems tenuous at best. I haven’t had a chance to read it yet though so wil try and find the time soon.

@pshread ok i have now read it. I didn’t realise it was more comic book than actual report. I couldn’t actually see any “data” in there, there is lots of opinion dressed up as data and a mass of correlation being presented as causation but overall it is a terrible document that, the once great, IBM should really be ashamed of putting its name to.

No doubt these numbers will be clutched tightly by VC backed tech vendors desperate to get CISOs to part with their hard earned budget but anyone with any sense will laugh them out of the room if presented with this nonsense.
