In the wake of Yet Another Racist Hate Campaign against a Black fedi user, I have a request for everyone, from any instance.

Have a look through the #fediblock hashtag for the past few days. See if your instance federates with any of the demonstrably racist instances listed there, and if it does, ask your admins to suspend them.

Federating with instances that don't action racists makes every Black person on your instance a target for harassment. Demand better.

But *Do Not* go into the replies of a Black person who's demonstrating the level of racist harassment they receive on the fedi and tell them they should move instance. Do not victim blame.

We need better tooling to tackle racism and harassment on the fediverse, 100% - and having better tooling will minimise the hate speech that people get exposed to - but tooling is not the problem. The problem is that people are racist. It is not the recipient of racism who is at fault; it's the racist.

If you're a white person and want to be an ally, you have other options than victim blaming.

Make sure your instance blocks racist abusers. Ask what measures they're taking to ensure the safety of BIPoC folk on your instance. Ask the developers of your instance's software what tools they're implementing to help combat racism. Ask them what demographic of people they're listening to when developing those tools (I can pretty much guarantee hardly any are listening to Black folk).

If you see someone leaving a racist reply on a post, report it, and forward it to all involved instances (the report functionality lets you do this). Don't just mute/block/limit that account yourself (which only takes the racist away for you); report it to your instance admins so that they can take action (which takes the racist away for everyone on your instance). Follow up and check that action *has* been taken, too. I know it's a little bit of work, but that's what being an ally means.
@Curator While it sounds radical, I think one thing that would help would be to get this message to billionaires. IF we don't see some relief politically from the current trends of wealth division, the solution will be had by the violence of billions of people taking the wealth back. No private security will be able to hold back that eventuality. They need to understand that fear.
