July 30 1945: USS Indianapolis had just delivered uranium and other parts to Tinian Naval Base for the nuclear bomb "Little Boy" which was dropped on Hiroshima a week later. Just after midnight it was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58, and sank in just 12 minutes. 300 went down with the ship, leaving 890 men stranded in the Pacific. For 4 days they endured horrific shark attacks, exposure, dehydration, and saltwater poisoning. On Aug 3 a PBY Flying Boat rescued 316 survivors. It is the US Navy's greatest loss of life from a single ship lost at sea. The wreckage was found in 2017 by a team funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
