Surgical tech aspiring to be a nurse, here:
I don’t get many trans patients, but in an effort to provide better care when I do…
How’s your healthcare experience been? I’d wager the staff actively involved in your transition were decent - what about your other care for unrelated appointments?
What would you like to see changed / what’s done right?
Is there anything YOU would have done differently or wish you’d have known sooner? (things I can pass along to other trans patients who may be frustrated with the current healthcare system)
My healthcare experience has honestly been pretty good, dealing with depression has been much harder than transitioning and dealing with dysphoria for me. The latter has been a lot of trial and error, but my trans healthcare has been fantastic, and it really seemed like everyone involved knew what they were doing. Particularly my endocrinologist prescribing hormones and my psychologist talking to me and referring me to where I needed to go. Without those two I’d be lost.
Access is the biggest thing I’d like to see changed. I have good insurance that was able to keep me seeing the doctor prescribing me hormones even when my insurance changed. I know a lot of people don’t get that option, which seems messed up. And a lot of that is only because I’m in a place that allows transition to begin with.
Other than just transitioning sooner in life? I wish I knew more about the different gender affirming surgical options that existed sooner. Getting face surgery was one of the largest confidence boosts for me, but it took me a good five years before I started to pursue it when I probably could have moved on that faster.
Who or what types of people do you least get along with. Not in generalizations though.
What I mean
Like you don’t tend to get along with ppl who are libras for some reason, outdoorsy people, home bodies, people who are still clubbing at 35.
Shit like that pretty much
When I talk to many older cisgendered people a commonality in their experience I hear communicated to me seems to be a kind of sudden awareness of trans issues and even transgender people, I’m aware that trans people have always existed and the spectrum gender outside of western cultures is diverse. I don’t personally believe that trans people suddenly came into existence but I can kind of understand someone who is generally unaware of the world and not interested in issues that don’t directly impact them could feel that way if they interact with mainstream news.
As a trans woman do you feel the same way or has there always been awareness of the issue because of your situation? Do you think an increased awareness and focus on trans issues has been overall more positive or negative?
