I'm glad that Trump's comments about his supporters not needing to vote anymore after this election are getting so much pickup today, and want to add that this line wasn't a one off -- he's said it repeatedly during his recent speeches
[excerpt 7/26/2024] Heather Cox Richardson
“…Trump made his plans to become a strongman clear: “Get out and vote. Just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what: it’ll be fixed, it’ll be fine. You won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians…. Get out, you’ve got to get out and vote. In four years, you don’t have to vote again, we’ll have it fixed so good you’re not going to have to vote.”

@marklemley don't forget the slip where he accidentally said, "I'm not Christian".

It is like a thing that the Antichrist would be compelled to say just so it can be pointed to later when all his followers say, "I didn't know! How could I have known?"

God, I hate this book.

@Urban_Hermit @marklemley when I read the CBS story they transcribed it as I am a Christian.

@spocko @marklemley I listened closely to the video about a half hour ago on a large media website and to my surprise it wasn't even close.

The corporate media, so afraid of bias accusations from the 'party of stupid ideas' has, for several years, been modifying quotes to be a less appalling version of what he probably meant to say. Easier than reporting when the party provides a transcript of their "approved" speech. I think they started giving in during the Bush Jr. years.

@spocko @marklemley

The Bush Jr. years... remember when stupid but probably likable was a strategy? When they hid the evil master minds? The party of shit ideas (tax cuts and pollution rights for the rich, and everyone else gets racism and resentment) don't even have control of their own party any more.

Now they tell the party spokesman the evil parts and he blurts them out loud at his next speech to see if they get applause from his ever diminishing crowd.

@Urban_Hermit @marklemley
Interesting. One of the things I know about the media is that don't want to get beat up by the right. So they bend over backwards to be "balanced", even when they have to "Balance" 30k lies with one mistake from the left.

@Urban_Hermit @marklemley Here is the CBS transcription. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/donald-trump-christian-voters-turning-point-action/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab7e&linkId=524934086

Trump continued: "I love you Christians and I'm a Christian. I love you, you got to get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again. We'll have it fixed so good, you're not going to have to vote."

Here is where Trump lies.
Toward the end of his hour-long speech, Trump said that the Democrats rigged the 2020 presidential election – which Trump falsely maintained that he won over President Biden.

Trump tells Christian voters they "won't have to vote anymore" if he is elected in November

Trump, who is the Republican Party's candidate for president, made his remarks at the end of a speech at a conservative Christian event.

@spocko @marklemley the transcript is a lie. Link above to the video.

It is clearly not "and I'm a Christian".

It is "My beautiful Christians. I'm not Christian" and he touches his chest with his right hand. The "and" and "a" sounds are not present. At exactly 21 seconds.

It is a gaff, and a lie if we don't acknowledge it happened. Other candidates have been sunk for less.

Can we all agree that he is appalling and the most AntiChrist like presidential candidate in history?

@Urban_Hermit @spocko @marklemley
Yes.
" ..., I'm not Christian, ..."

At 32 seconds below.

There is the possibility that Trump wants to be seen as Christ. And that's why he says he is not [a follower of Christ].

I believe Trump said, "I'm not a christian", according to the closed captioning on my TV when he said it.
@Urban_Hermit @spocko @marklemley The media really started giving in during the Reagan years. There had been decades of “gentlemanly” coverup of FDR’s disability and his and Ike’s infidelities. When I was a kid, I remember TV and newspaper coverage as a mixture of policy and horserace coverage, with some personality discussion, and a lot of pro-business, self-serving opinion pieces from both Republican- and Democratic-leaning papers. Kennedy may have won with better makeup and personality at his debate with Nixon, but it was what it was. TV helped push out LBJ when they started reporting on the War instead of reading the official propaganda. The press drove Nixon out of office by aggressively reporting misbehavior that now seems trivial. Reagan went into rightwing politics as an actor and liar from the beginning and always got a pass, all the way through the Iran hostage treason (with Bush Sr.) and his eventual cognitive failure in office.
