Swiss Federal Government Adopts Open Source Licensing for Its Software

A big boost to the open-source community and an inspiration to other public sectors!

It's FOSS News
@eunews all programs or only #custom software made for the Swiss government?
@kkarhan @eunews If I read the link contents, I get the impression it is all software, so no MS Office for the Swiss government anymore.
@markdevries @eunews Again: I'm wary since last time I checked they still used #Windows...
@kkarhan @markdevries @eunews
What I've seen and if I understand correctly:
* "package software" like Office are exempt and will be used like before.
* any newly developed software for use in the public sector must have source code available for future development. Not open source per se, but avoiding vendor lock-in by having the sources available.
@jago @markdevries @eunews That's what I've known so far and been the only confirmed scope so far: "Custom" solutions must be #FLOSS'd or at least provided with #SourceCode & #Copyright to the Swiss government, but #COTS solutions like #Windows are still allowed as they don't get customized but are in fact "commercial off-the-shelf"...
@eunews that headline is wrong
