I think what I'm struggling with is a supposed 'privacy' organization releasing a *Bitcoin Only* wallet. (read between lines: bad privacy)

If Proton wants a non-privacy service, I think that's fine. But this isn't a typical Proton product for 'privacy people' IMHO

@techlore Their Proton Wallet launch seems... interesting. I wouldn't use it regardless, I have Stack Wallet that supports multiple coins, including privacy-focused coins like Monero. A cool thing I seem to like about Proton Wallet is that they mention you could send Bitcoin "as easy as sending an email", because literally, if the recipient has a Proton Account, including third-party email addresses, that's all you'd need to send them BTC. That's pretty handy.

Proton's "reason" for the existence of Proton Wallet seems to be that they believe in the "principle od giving you control of your financial freedom", and with this anyone can have a "free, secure and easy-to-use Bitcoin wallet". Not privacy-focused, but I don't think it's completely off-brand for Proton.

@techlore I’m personally super excited for this. I use Bitcoin for payments and this would make managing wallets and sending money much easier. Almost no commerce accepts Monero, or any other coin to be honest. If they started with Monero this would’ve been dead on arrival just like Signal’s MobileCoin. Start with bitcoin and slowly add support for other currencies.
@techlore Does anyone still use proof of work coins? They don’t seem to have any good features and are terrible for the planet.
@techlore well it could have been a wallet that uses coinjoin for transactions if they were going hard with the privacy angle. Who knows, maybe they've even thought of that but didn't go for it because USA is going after coinjoin currently.
@techlore while Bitcoin is not private by design, I'd rather have a wallet made by Proton rather than Meta. In my opinion it's clearly just a first step. They will most likely add other crypto and, who knows, maybe even fiat currencies.
@techlore if you want *good enough* privacy, might as well use Monero on Feather Wallet over TOR while writing your seeds on a piece of paper or a steel plate. It's just as easy/difficult, you aren't at the mercy of cryptobros and you use FOSS software that has been proven over the years as actual criminals use it and they are fine.
