I might have taken the W after Piper, but pretty unbelievable set up through that. “Everything’s Right” felt earned. #Phish
@DaveG924 Was just thinking, we want that for the purposes of how the show looks later. But Trey doesn’t think a 4/5 song set with all jams is a properly rounded night of entertainment.
@JeremyDGoodwin yeah he definitely doesn’t. I’ll always ascribe to less is more, but I understand why he disagrees.
@DaveG924 @JeremyDGoodwin instead of a 6:30 min piper; let it breathe a bit and cap it off with a slave. End set. That would be pretty.
@Phreba @DaveG924 @JeremyDGoodwin They capped off the show before with a Slave so it wasn’t available, but I get your point.
@Phreba @DaveG924 It would be! It’s still the svelte all-jM set you want though, and not the 80min, more varied performance the artists were interested in creating. And while people like us are thinking in term of aesthetically pleasing setlists in the trophy case, they’re thinking about the live show happening right then.

@JeremyDGoodwin @Phreba @DaveG924 Correct. Trey wants to steer into a bombastic rock finale. We know he thinks about this because he purposefully writes songs that can serve as set closers.

The middle path that I think we can appreciate is that he knows when to go to Piper (even if he has no intention of playing a long Piper these days) and how to move towards that big closer from there.

@DaveG924 @rowjimmy @Phreba It was interesting how he turned Everything’s Right into a set closer by simply raving up rather than stretching out, but at the cost of the song’s great value — an ironically dark jam. I don’t like that trade-off myself.
@JeremyDGoodwin @DaveG924 @Phreba It’ll come around the other way again. The upside of having so many songs that work there is that he throws them out all over the sets now… eg: Character Zero last weekend (which even had a little jam in it!)
@rowjimmy @JeremyDGoodwin @DaveG924 those of us that collected tapes all those years, love the balance of a well crafted set, it just looked great on paper. So, it’s hard to let go of the trappings of the past. That said, I’d leave that show beaming that I caught yet another gem.
@rowjimmy @Phreba @DaveG924 For sure, and I share your tastes! I’ve thought a lot about how fans like us, other fans, and the band have different agendas.
@Phreba @DaveG924 @rowjimmy The really thrilling periods of Phish history are when the band has seemed to share the agenda of the superfans , with the more casual fans happily along for the ride.
@JeremyDGoodwin @DaveG924 @rowjimmy so true! There were so many shows years ago that felt they were built for the über geeked out fan. I mean, I know that tour closers(or near to them) were often sets crafted by the “green crew”. That seems to have gone away for more setlist balance; something for everyone(normie, casual fan, and super fan).
@rowjimmy @DaveG924 @Phreba Big picture I think we’re in one of those periods of alignment right now (4.0). For years the band was trying to appeal to fans with setlist wackiness and assorted shenanigans. Which was nice. Now, extended jamming is a thing they’re once more interested in exploring regularly; it’s almost the default. I love it.
@Phreba @DaveG924 @rowjimmy I don’t think I’ve ever heard that the Green Crew had a night to create a setlist. Sounds … wrong, hah? Could totally see if they were invited to make song requests that would be honored, though.
@Phreba @DaveG924 Think of how tiny the population of people at a rock concert is who are loving it and thinking “OK, hope they wrap this up early so the setlist is pretty.” People want “one more song!”
@DaveG924 was thinking the same. After that Piper I was ready for the encore, would have been a perfect set II (for me at least). By the time they started ER I at least suspected (and was proven right) that it would be more of a set II closing rager as opposed to the typical jam vehicle. Not opposed to the extra songs, but they turned an A+ set into an A- in my mind.
