@zrb Cos women are, on average, not as strong as men, they'd never win if most sports weren't segregated by gender. Even female runners like Caster Semenya aren't as fast as the best male high school sprinters.

@davidnjoku @zrb
That's certainly the post-facto excuse.

Historically though a lot of sports were segregated as soon as women started beating men.

This is the case with shotgun skeet shooting - a mixed Olympic event from introduction in 1968 until 1992. What happened in 1992? Zhang Shan, a Chinese woman, won gold. Women were barred from competing in 1996, and a separate women's division introduced (with different rules so there's no risk of women objectively beating men) in 2000.

@dragonfrog Oh wow, I didn't know that. But I've got to admit that I'm not surprised.

@zrb

@davidnjoku @dragonfrog @zrb Lumping say ice hockey and skeet shooting into the same top-level category is kind of odd, really. Once read an argument that competitive activities such as shooting/billiards/etc are better categorized as "skills" rather than "sports". Then make all skills competitions be open to all comers since the inherent strength/height considerations of "sports" have no relevance.
Made too much sense to ever happen I suppose, certainly in anything as braindead as the Olympics.
