Heard the timeline was in desperate need of a baby wild hamster right now. Got here as quickly as I could.

@fondoffawns Yeah! Several species worldwide: this is the European one which is sadly very endangered but there are quite visible little populations around Vienna's old graveyards and they're very cute indeed.
The European ones are much bigger than pet hamsters (which are mostly bred from littler middle-eastern species): these can grow up to more like 30cm long.
@Ruth_Mottram Yes, definitely, it's the only species that's ever (at least within human history) had a range as far northwest as the Netherlands. And I can see how they got it - as noted in the previous toot they really are chunky little things!
I hadn't come across that Dutch name though, that's lovely, thank you!
@Ruth_Mottram @JubalBarca @fondoffawns Yes!
I found out about them after being served a beer called Korenwolf in Maastricht. There are great clips of some in a Vienna cemetary from a BBC/Attenborough documentary on YouTube. Eating candles.
@crinolinerobot @Ruth_Mottram @fondoffawns
Yes, I've seen them doing that a few times, I took this video of it in 2020 I think:

@fondoffawns Oh yes! It's very confusing, but they are ridiculously cute and quite large, and like to live in the city.
