#Gospel Reading: Mark 6:14-29

Mark related the story of #John the Baptist's demise.

#Herod Antipas heard of #Jesus and the powerful working He accomplished.

Some thought He was a prophet, or Elijah; others thought He was the raised John the Baptist, and the latter is what Herod feared.

Herod had arrested John because of his wife Herodias who had been the wife of his brother Philip.

John had told Herod he had no right to her according to the Law.

Herodias thus wanted him dead, but Herod protected him as a righteous and holy man.

He did not understand John but often listened to him.

Herod put on a feast for his birthday; Salome daughter of Herodias danced and pleased him, and he promised to give her whatever she wanted.

She consulted her mother and thus asked for the head of John the Baptist.

It grieved Herod but he had sworn an oath.

Thus John was beheaded and the head put on a platter, and Salome gave it to Herodias.

John's disciples came and buried John's body.

Who was Jesus? Was Herod right to be afraid?
