drummers... some help

when I play hi-hat (mostly foot on 2 and 4, with some swing hi hat and splashes) I find that it changes sound all the time. sometimes the pedal "chk" is loud, sometimes not. it changes through my practice sessions.

my question is; is this a musicianship issue, or a gear issue with the hi-hat stand? (its a pretty cheap hi-hat stand)

@naima Could be both. It's tricky to be consistent with the pedal since the sound depends quite strongly on how much pressure you get up to and how quickly you release. At the same time, if the bottom hat isn't stable on its felt, or if the top hat isn't screwed in tightly, it'll be a lot harder than it should be.

Are you keeping your foot hard down on beats 1 and 3, or are you trying to bounce on it?

@tuftyindigo not that hard... enough to make the chk sound and for it not to splash up

edit; - just actually read the question properly. i'm very heel-down... a few books i've read have said that you should play heel up but i really struggled. then a drummer i know from jam sessions told me that if you really can't get something, then don't do it. so i play heel down and don't feel bad!
