Éibhear 🔭@arstechnica The ad industry has been working very hard for decades to criminalise efforts to avoid ads. It sounds ludicrous, but in 2016 the Newspaper Association of America petitioned the FTC to make adblockers illegal. 10-15 years ago there was a push to make skipping ads using a DVR illegal.
Musk's demand here sounds totally reasonable to some people. However, I'd say they're not thanking him; he has so pooped the bed that they'd hate him to be their spokesman.
