I stop at red lights when I’m biking if there is anyone at all around, even though sometimes you feel like a dork.
If you’ve ever been to an anti-bike gathering you’ll know why.
@paige I'm torn on this one, I went from stopping at all lights always to never stopping at lights unless absolutely necessary. It feels like anti-bike people will complain no matter what cyclists do so why bother trying to appease? I'd love to try changing the issue from why do all cyclists jump red lights to when's the last time a cyclist caused a serious injury or death?
@hermzz @paige I think he's talking less about appeasing them and more about not dying to vindictive drivers hitting him out of spite
@Tactician_mark @hermzz I stop at reds for both reasons.
It’s an easy way to reduce the chances of being hit so I can relax a bit more while riding.
I find people who blow through reds annoying, often crappier cyclists. I assume any Montrealer has seen headphones-ebike guy rolling a dice at an intersection and winced. He’s making the rest of us look bad.
@paige @Tactician_mark I do agree with that sentiment. For me it's about context and the difference between blowing a red and proceeding cautiously through. There are plenty of low traffic intersections with good visibility where I can go through as long as I slow down and check for other road users. Stopping at these feels futile and frustrating, especially when light timings sometimes mean not making another larger intersection later.
