So basically, Macron scared the bejesus out of sane France and they came together to assure the fascists would not win. That is what should be happening in the US if we would get our act together and tell media's baying bloodhounds to fuck off and prioritize democracy. https://www.lemonde.fr/en/france/article/2024/07/07/french-elections-left-projected-to-win-most-seats-ahead-of-macron-s-coalition-and-far-right_6676978_7.html
French elections: Left projected to win most seats, ahead of Macron's coalition and far right

According to initial estimates, the Nouveau Front Populaire left-wing alliance is projected to win between 172 and 192 seats in France's Assemblée Nationale, slightly ahead of Macron's coalition (between 150 and 170) and well ahead of the far-right Rassemblement National (between 132 and 152).

Massive props for, "media's baying bloodhounds".

@jeffjarvis very true. Let’s hope for a similar outcome in the US.

@jeffjarvis there are still some old French people who can remember the Nazis taking over their country.
Americans please get real.

MAGA = NAZI

@jeffjarvis

Jeff to Jeff, what are some ways we can do this?

I have already unsubscribed from and stopped paying for the news, but I feel there is more that I can do. If there is more that I could be doing then sign me up! How can I help send a bigger message?

@daw15

@jeffjarvis What happened in France was not that. Macron put the ball in moving but he didn't make people to vote leftist alliance.

It was that LEFT won it by their own terms, by mobilizing their grass roots!

You can't do that with Biden anymore, he is tainted by Israel and Gaza.

@jeffjarvis And I'm not saying people should disregard polls, but I will say that the left and center-left have been consistently outperforming them, globally, for the past several years, and I think that's something we should keep in mind.

20% of registered voters in Arizona signed the petition to get abortion access on the ballot. I don't know what will happen on Election Day, but there's no way to read that as a good sign for the GOP in an important swing state.

@jeffjarvis

They're selling the country, themselves, and their children in exchange for ratings and ad sales.

@jeffjarvis This is based on the assumption that American voters will change if only they could see thru the dog-whistles of "fascism".

What if too many find the thin edge of the wedge appealing?

@jeffjarvis We have no control or influence with respect to our media.
@jeffjarvis macron took a huge gamble, but it looks like his instincts were right
@peterhoneyman @jeffjarvis his party lost its majority, I doubt that was the plan.
@jeffjarvis ok, let's try to relate this French result to USA. The French far right is GOP/Trump. Macron is essentially more functioning centre left version of dysfunctional Dems/Biden. So where does this leave the French Left? Most likely equivalence is the chunk of eligible voters who stay home cus it cant be RFK jr etc? When only two horses are in the race, it works perfect for the elites, they can make both options right wing flavours to suit their agenda.

@jeffjarvis Yes!

How'd you like to crush corruption and drown the fascism it fuels?https://x.com/PatrickLovell1/status/1789128712006574154

@jeffjarvis imagine if there was a situation in America where an out-of-touch, centrist leader let his own sense of self-importance lead to a great chance at power for the fascists?

@jeffjarvis

The difference is that there are no left wing parties in the US. The strength of the French response to the threat of fascism comes from those on the left, who won the most seats. The convention is that the president chooses a PM from the party with the most seats. Macron (and French democracy) would be toast without them.

The US is a deeply flawed democracy in only having two parties.
