Happy 4th of July to my American friends!

Or as we in the UK call it, Thanksgiving Day!

@cstross With extra reasons to be thankful today, hopefully!

@cstross In #lillestrøm east of Oslo in Norway they have a parade with american cars ending up in front of the #nova_spektrum

Probably was quite rainy this year?

@cstross And looking at Rishi Sunak, I see this year we're having a turkey
@DreadShips Yup, better stick a fork in it—he's done!
@cstross I like to tell Americans that the 4th of July is a National Day of mourning for our people, called Colonial Rebellion Day. A few of them have believed it!
@cstross I’m surprised you did say good riddance after George Washington started the Seven Years War by attacking a French fort against orders. (Seriously! I only recently learned that. We barely cover the French-Indian War, and mention George Washington fighting in it, but we apparently skip over the fact that he started it.)

@jonathankoren @cstross When George Washington was appointed Commander of the Continental Army in 1775, he decided the volunteer militia were stupid and lazy and not deferential enough, so he introduced the court martial, the lash, and the pillory. So many men left that Congress had to authorize the creation of a paid standing army. So it's largely thanks to him that the founders' dream of not having a standing army — the reason for the Second Amendment — fell apart.

Not sure if that gets covered in US school history classes, but I'm guessing not.

@cstross Thanks, we’re celebrating by reviving the monarchy.
@cstross
@popey referred to it as Treason Day...and called us a bunch of ungrateful colonials...
@cstross I thought British Thanksgiving commemorated the day that the Puritans embarked on the Mayflower.
@cstross thanks, we went big this year, since it's our final independence day.
