is there some topic that comes to mind that a large number of people you associate with have very high expertise in and/or care a lot about, but for which you are a mere dilettante whose interest (insofar as it exists) is sustained only by your curiosity about what your friends seem to like?

for me it’s the rust programming language

oh, also polyamory

my relationships to rust and polyamory are actually remarkably similar

i tried it when i was younger, thought it was neat, remain glad people seem to care about doing it right, and would probably try it again if the need arose, but at my current station in life, the fine-grained resource allocation and invariant maintenance needed to keep everything safe kind of feels like more trouble than it's worth

@chrisamaphone

Actually, same for me and haskell 🤔.

I was really into it as an undergrad, and it worked really well for me, but it's hard to do in grad school. I'll be excited when the opportunity presents itself again, haha

@chrisamaphone

And I still consider myself a haskell programmer, even if I haven't written much haskell lately :P

@hallasurvivor lol yeah. i was single for most of grad school and also didn't know what i wanted out of a thesis topic for most of it sooo this tracks
@chrisamaphone no "nowhere near that person"? You're doing well!
@chrisamaphone haha, I wonder what systems programming in non-memory-safe languages corresponds to in this analogy
@chrisamaphone I bow to the elegance of this witty analogy
